Challenges of Industrial-Scale Testing Infrastructure for Green Hydrogen Technologies

Green hydrogen is set to become the energy carrier of future, provided that production technologies such as electrolysis and solar water splitting can be scaled global dimensions. Testing these on MW scale requires development dedicated new test facilities for which there no precedent. This perspective highlights challenges met path implementing a facility large-scale electrolysis, photoelectrochemical photocatalytic aims serve much-needed blueprint future based authors’ own experience in establishing Hydrogen Lab Leuna. Key aspects considered are electricity utility requirements devices under testing, analysis produced H2 O2 safety regulations handling large quantities H2. Choosing right location crucial not only meeting device requirements, but also improving financial viability through supplying affordable providing remunerated sink offset testing costs. Due their lower TRL requirement light source, photocatalysis photoelectrochemistry less developed currently predictable.
